Govt Refutes UN’s Claims, Says Democratic Space “Expanding”, Not “Shrinking”

Government responding to United Nations Human Right High Commissioner’s observation of “shrinking democratic space” said that the democratic space in the country is “expanding”, not shrinking; where the rule of law is upheld, and where all those accused receive a fair trial.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein speaking at the 32nd Human Rights Council session in Geneva had expressed concern about the “shrinking democratic space” in the country and said the use of terrorism related charges “troubled” him.

Taking note of the remarks, Foreign Ministry said that the government is ready for discussions over proposed institutional legislative reforms.

Inviting the UN to the Maldives, the government said, “Requested OHCHR to appoint an expert to the Maldives to assist the Government in shaping critical policies and legislation for strengthening governance and improving human rights standards and compliance.”
